I posted this in FB Heritage group but no response as of yet. I have .22 mag cylinders....have ceased to use them because of the price of .22 mag ammo, but I was wondering if anyone that wanted one that bad ever thought of asking a good machine shop to ream one out of a reg .22lr cylinder....if it can even be done. I see everyone complaining they have not received ones ordered months ago, and also wonder about the same thing with the lack of 9 rd mag cylinders. I know little about machining parts , so maybe cost would not be real advantageous either.

Two reasons why it's not a good idea: 1:The .22 mag cylinder does not have flutes, the .22 LR cylinder does. The lack of flutes adds strength to the magnum cylinder. 2: The visual and tactile differences help avoid mixing them up and shooting LR in the magnum cylinder, which is definitely not a good idea. I thought about that already....I would highly polish the one I made into a .22 mag and leave the reg lr black.

That takes care of the visual i.d., but doesn't address the strength issue. Not only are you losing strength because of the flutes, you're removing metal when you ream the chambers, making the cylinder even weaker. I doubt a gunsmith would agree to do it, but I suppose you could buy you own reamer and do it yourself. Of course, that opens up a whole other can of liability worms.

A machinist would charge you more than the 29.00 it costs to buy on the internet. I've bought 2 on ebay and had no problems. Free shipping and got them in 3 to 4 days.

Well these replies are good enough for me. Like I said I stopped using my .22 mag cylinders all together. I have some ammo for them and if I ever had a SHTF situation I would have a few extra hundred .22 mag rds to hold off them zombies.,...or *%**&$#& commie party freaks!

I have a friend that wanted 1 chamber reamed to 22Mag. His was an older gun and it did not leave the cylinder dangerously thin.[ I can't say that about all cylinders, but his was OK]. He leaves the Mag chamber empty, but if he wanted some more Oomph it's there. I don't think it would be safe to do that with a 9 shot cylinder, they would be too close together. Just my opinion! I have also seen this done to Ruger Bearcat's. And even one converted to 32 S&W. DR

I'd be concerned about the frame cracking on the top strap after the conversion. Did he beef it up?

There would be no more strain than using the Heritage cylinder in 22 mag.

A LR fits so loosely in a magnum chamber that case splitting is a real danger. I've had it happen and fortunately for me there was no injury involved but I have read of incidents where the shooter got hit with debris.

I'm not seeing the problem. My friend only puts a Mag in the Mag chamber. When not shooting mag He leaves that one empty. No different than having a mag cylinder. Unless you are saying it's possible to get a LR in the Mag Chamber? I have seen people do that with a Mag cylinder. They just did not notice the sloppy fit. Just like accidently loading 20 ga into a 12 ga shotgun. You just have to pay attn to what you are loading. DR

That's exactly what I'm saying. As I said, I've done it and seen the result. I've also read accounts of others doing it and paying for it. Firing .22LR in a magnum chamber is tempting fate.
